Wrestlers Earn National Honors

INDIANAPOLIS.  Twenty-one Utah wrestlers participated in the AAU Grand National Wrestling Championships held July 10–13 in Indianapolis, Indiana and brought home six national titles.

Half of those championship medals were garnered by Mark Smith, wrestling in the 220 pound class, Elite division.  Smith took top honors in Sombo, Greco-Roman and freestyle competition.

There were nineteen hundred entrants in the three styles of wrestling.  The Utah contingent, all members of the Sundance Wrestling Club, earned 33 medals overall.

Jeff Winderlin, who, along with Bill Kilpack, coaches the club, received special recognition and a plaque for his efforts as AAU wrestling director of Region X.

Sundance Wrestlers placed as follows:

Bantam, Bart Phillips, 50 pounds, third Sombo and freestyle and second Greco-Roman; Junior, Tyler Phillips, 65 pounds, third Sombo and Greco-Roman and second freestyle.

Intermediate, Roman Vega, 70.5, third Sombo, fourth Greco-Roman, sixth freestyle; Scott Smith, 90, third Sombo; Dean Moody, 100, fourth freestyle.

Advanced, Chad Jacob, 99, third Sombo, sixth freestyle; Adam Walker, 105.5, fourth Greco-Roman; Jim Cox, 130, first Sombo; John Gitlin, 130, third Sombo; Glen Smith, 130, fourth Sombo; Dan Walker, 149.5, second Sombo.

Elite, Gary Hall, 106, second in Sombo, Greco-Roman and freestyle; Mark Smith, 220, first in Sombo, Greco-Roman and freestyle; Nehumi Masi, unlimited, first Sombo, second in freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Senior, Jed Jones, 125.5, first Greco-Roman; Chad Fowler, 149.5 and 136.5, third Sombo, fourth Greco-Roman.
