The Greensheet: August 1984
National Wrestling Title
Earned by Bill Kilpack
Bill Kilpack,
of West Jordan, just arrived home from competing in the AAU Grand National
Wrestling Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana July 13–15.
Bill entered three styles
of wrestling — Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Sombo.
This is the first year
that Sombo has been included in the AAU Grand Nationals. Sombo is a
cross between Judo and wrestling and emphasizes keeping your opponent off
balance and throwing him to the mat. Bill is the 1984 champion in
his division.
Greco-Roman wrestling
does not allow contact below the waist and is seen in international and
Olympic competition. Bill took third place in this event before
having to withdraw from competition with a neck injury.
The West Jordan Middle
School lad is the 1984 State Coaches Association Freestyle, AAU Zone
Freestyle and Greco-Roman champion. He is a member of the Sundance
Wrestling Club coached by his father and Jeff Winderlin.
