Jordan Junior Wrestlers Excel at Fremont

(Sandy, Utah) Dec. 7, 2011 — Seventeen members of Jordan Junior Wrestling traveled to Plain Cityto compete in the Fremont folkstyle wrestling tournament.  Of those 17, all placed, including five champions of seven in the finals.

“This was a great tournament for us,” said Coach Bill Kilpack. “It showed some real growth from the previous tournament, with some of your newer wrestlers developing new skills and understanding of the game. Our veterans definitely look less rusty. As a team, it was a vast improvement. We're very proud of them.”

Leading the team was first-year wrestlers Henry Larson of Sandy, Middle School (grades 4-6) 65 lbs. (Bracket B), and Eli Schott of Sandy, Middle School 115 lbs.; Ian Bushell of Sandy, 2nd Grade 57 lbs.; Weston Nielsen of Bluffdale, 1st Grade 53 lbs. (Bracket A); and Kyle Wood of Riverton, 1st Grade 48 lbs. All five went undefeated on the day, winning their brackets, while Larson was the only one to win in the finals with a pin.

Also making it to the finals was first-year wrestler Alura Hamilton of Salt Lake City, Junior High 110 lbs. (Bracket C); and Marshall Adams of Cottonwood Heights, Junior High 125 lbs.

Taking third were six young athletes: Todd Oldham of Sandy, Junior High 110 lbs. (Bracket B); Carson Bushell of Sandy, Junior high 110 lbs. (Bracket A); Gavin Dockstader of of Riverton, Middle School 90 lbs.; first-year wrestler Ben Coplin of Bluffdale, 4th Grade 74 lbs.; Trent Oldham of Sandy, 3rd Grade 82 lbs.; and Aaron Greene, 2nd Grade 75 lbs..

Placing fourth were Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, Middle School 75 lbs.; Ethan Wood of Sandy, Middle School 65 lbs.; first-year wrestler Braden Litchfield of West Jordan, 2nd Grade 52 lbs.; and Dawon Nielsen of Bluffdale, Pre-K 35 lbs.

"It was a great tournament!" said Coach Judd Kennelly. "The new guys are starting to click, and the experienced ones are getting back on the horse. Makes me proud."

Jordan Junior Wrestling is a folkstyle wrestling program offered through Salt Lake County Recreation, operating out or Jordan High School in Sandy.  The middle school/junior high team is for grades five through nine; the elementary team is for grades four and younger.  For more information, go to www.jordanjuniorwrestling.com or email jordanjuniors@aol.com.
