Jordan Junior Wrestlers Close Down
the Wasatch Youth Open

(Sandy, Utah) Jan. 12, 2010 — Twenty members of Jordan Junior Wrestling headed up to Heber Valley to compete in the Wasatch Youth Open wrestling tournament on Jan. 9, 2010.  Of those 20, all placed, including 11 in the finals, resulting in four champions.

“The growth from the previous week was substantial,” said Coach Bill Kilpack.  “We had quite a few move up their tournament placement since last week, and some had some good revenge matches.  We also got to face off against some new opponents, and did very well overall, without the week-after-week chess matches some have become.  It was good to have a clean slate to see how a bunch of the guys are progressing.”

The team was led by MacKelti Kilpack of Sandy, Justin Schwendiman of West Jordan, Trever Glaubensklee of Sandy and Tucker Butler of Saratoga Springs.  MacKelti, 13 years old, won the championship in dominating fashion, winning every match in the Junior High 100-pound bracket by fall or technical fall (gaining a 15-point lead), without allowing a single point to be scored against her.  Schwendiman, 14 years old, was just as dominant, pinning every opponent in the Junior High 85-pound bracket, only allowing three points to be scored against him over the day.  Glaubensklee won the 2nd Grade 50-pound bracket B, pinning every opponent but one, which he beat in a 12-1 decision.  Butler won the Kindergarten 45-pound bracket, dominating every opponent by at least 10 points, and allowing only two points to be scored against him on the day.

Making it to the finals were seven athletes.  Joey Revelli of West Jordan, Middle School 70 lbs.; Brian Morris of Bluffdale, Middle School 73 lbs.; Hayden Heninger of Saratoga Springs, Middle School 76 lbs.; Alex Miller of Sandy, 4th Grade 80 lbs.; Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, 3rd Grade 60 lbs.; Josh Millward of Saratoga Springs, 1st Grade 50 lbs. (Bracket A); and Jaden Stange of Midvale, 1st Grade 50 lbs. (Bracket B).

Placing third were four wrestlers: Trent McMillan of South Jordan, Junior High 76 lbs.; Tyler Fay of South Jordan, Middle School 65 lbs.; Zach Warren of Saratoga Springs, 3rd Grade 65 lbs.; and Kelly Glaubensklee of Sandy, 2nd Grade 65 lbs.

Finishing fourth were five young athletes: Hayden Butler of Saratoga Springs, Junior High 80 lbs.; Taven Herd of Sandy, Junior High 116 lbs.; Caden Bushell of Sandy, Junior High 135 lbs.; Kahlil Preston of Salt Lake City, 4th Grade 105 lbs.; and Ethan Wood of Riverton, 2nd Grade 50 lbs. (Bracket A).

"This was just an exciting tournament," said Coach Sean Warren.  "We had some kids win their first matches, we had some others really starting to wrestle smart, not making as many mistakes, and really starting to learn the sport.  It was a good tournament with a good showing.  And, as usual, we were one of the last matches of the day, closing down the tournament.  Really exciting!"
