Jordan Junior Wrestlers Dominate at Spanish Fork

(Sandy, Utah) Jan. 5, 2010 — Twenty-five members of Jordan Junior Wrestling recently headed down to Spanish Fork to compete in the Spanish Fork K–9 folkstyle wrestling tournament held at Spanish Fork High School.  Of those 25, 23 placed, including 17 in the finals, resulting in six champions.

“The guys really showed some growth since the last tournament,” said Coach Bill Kilpack (III).  “Where, last tournament, we gave up some early leads, this week, we went to work early.  Their technique is getting sharper and they're executing.  We just need to pull it up the extra notch in those tough finals matches.  It's really exciting to watch them progress.”

The team was led by 12-year-old Joey Revelli of West Jordan, who pinned two out of his three opponents, while only allowing two points to be scored against him over the course of the day.  This led him to the Middle School 66-pound tournament championship.

The other five champions were 9-year-old Alex Miller of Draper, Middle School 82 lbs.; 8-year-old Payton Heninger of Saratoga Springs, 7–8 Year Old 55 lbs.; 7-year-old Ethan Wood of Riverton, 6–7 Year Old 55 lbs.; 6-year-old Josh Millward of Lehi, 5–6 Year Old 50 lbs.; and 5-year-old Levi Ericson of Sandy, 5–6 Year Old 55 lbs.

Making it to the finals were 11 athletes in the Junior High, Middle School and Grade School Divisions.

In the Junior High Division were seven finalists: 14-year-old Clay Moss of Sandy, 145 lbs. (Bracket A); 14-year-old Shane McMillan of South Jordan, 145 lbs. (Bracket B); 13-year-old Caden Bushell of Sandy, 130 lbs.; 13-year-old MacKelti Kilpack of Sandy, 104 lbs.; 14-year-old Justin Schwendiman of West Jordan, 84 lbs. (Bracket A); and 12-year-old Alex Maxwell of Sandy, 84 lbs. (Bracket B).

In the Middle School Division were two finalists: 11-year-old Simon Tait of South Jordan, 98 lbs.; and 11-year-old Hayden Heninger of Saratoga Springs, 72 lbs.

In the Grade School Divisions were two finalists: 8-year-old Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, 7–8 Year Olds 60 lbs. (Bracket A); and Spencer Maxwell of Sandy, 8–9 Year Olds 65 lbs.

Placing third were three young athletes: 8-year-old Gavin Carlson of West Valley City, 7–8 Year Old 60 lbs. (Bracket B); 7-year-old Zach Warren of Saratoga Springs, 8–9 Year Old 65 lbs.; and 7-year-old Koji Ericson of Sandy, 5–6 Year Old 50 lbs.

Placing fourth were three wrestlers: 12-year-old Nicholas Rice of Draper, Junior High 70 lbs.; Jared McMillan of South Jordan, Middle School 103 lbs.; and 10-year-old Ty Carlson of West Valley City, Middle School 72 lbs.

Also competing were Tyler Fay of South Jordan, Middle School 64 lbs.; and Taven Herd of Sandy, Junior High 116 lbs.

"There were some really great matches this weekend," said Coach Sean Warren.  "We fell a little short on some that really hurt but, overall, it was a great day.  A lot of improvements over the last tournament."
