Young Utah Wrestlers Heading to Nationals
Sandy's William Kilpack
and Nicholas Runyon will represent Utah at the USA Wrestling Kids
Nationals this week, after leading a strong Utah contingent at the
USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships last weekend in Klamath
Falls, Ore.
Kilpack was one of five
young wrestlers - participants ranged in age from 9 to 16 years old,
and hailed from 11 states - to win titles in both freestyle and
Greco-Roman disciplines, while four others won single championships.
"Utah was very well
represented in Oregon," said Craig LaMont, president of USA
Wrestling-Utah. "With only 55 kids there, we weren't the biggest
state there, but we came out second in freestyle in terms of
championships, coming in behind California, who probably had more
wrestlers there than the host state. It was a real pleasure to see
some of those kids really excel."
Mapleton's Taylor and
Grant LaMont, Draper's Tayler Johnson and Kaysville's Ethan
Lofthouse also won double titles. Kaysville's Patrick Brock won a
freestyle championship, while Springville's Brandon George, West
Jordan's Jacob Falk and Logan's Jordan Ballam won Greco-Roman
championships. Runyon was sixth in the freestyles in his age group.
The national meet will
be held in Green Bay, Wis.
