Local Youth Take Top Prizes at Wrestling Contest

Several South Valley youth earned medals at the Mountain Top Classic Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament, the last leg of the Intermountain Champion Series. The young wrestlers are members of the Mountain Top Wrestling Club in Sandy, where the championships were held.

“This was a great couple days,” said coach Bill Kilpack III. “Hosting a tournament is always a challenge, but the parents really pitched in, as we pulled of another good one. We have wrestlers come in representing seven states and to have 70 wrestlers entered from our own club was amazing.”

In the freestyle tournament, 60 awards were earned, led by 13 champions, the most recorded by the club in the tournament’s three-year history. Taking gold medals were brothers Jed and Matt Lee of Draper, Jed at bantam (ages 7 and 8) 40 pounds, Matt at midget (ages 9 and 10) 55 pounds; Jordan McRae of South Jordan, midget 65 pounds; and Gavin Krushensky of South Jordan, midget 120+ pounds.

Taking silver medals in the freestyle tournament were 16 athletes, another club record. Runner-ups in freestyle included brothers Devin and Tayler Johnson of Draper, Devin at bantam 50 pounds and Tayler at midget 70 pounds; Ajax Revels of Riverton, bantam 75 pounds; Sean Keating of South Jordan, midget 75 pounds; Brayden Staker of South Jordan, midget 120+ pounds; Matt Findlay of Draper, novice 75 pounds; Nathan Lamb of Draper, schoolboy 115 pounds; and Travis McRae of South Jordan, cadet (ages 15 and 16) 140 pounds.

Taking bronze medals in freestyle were Mason Christianson of Riverton, flyweight 50 pounds; Beau McRae of South Jordan, bantam 60 pounds; and Jacob Allred of South Jordan, novice 60 pounds.

Winning fourth-place awards in freestyle were Garrett Lamb of Draper, midget 65 pounds; Mason Olsen of South Jordan, novice 80 pounds; and Jon Lee of Draper, novice 90 pounds.

Earning fifth-place awards were Hunter Hellander of South Jordan, bantam 50 pounds; and Greg Lamb of Draper, midget 70 pounds.

Taking sixth place in freestyle were Jacxon Allred of South Jordan, bantam 50 pounds; and Jacob Skousen of Draper, midget 70 pounds.

In the Greco-Roman competition, wrestlers earned 47 awards, including 17 champions. Again, this was a team record at this tournament.
