South Valley Kids Wrestle with Success
Six South Valley youngsters earned medals at the Gladiator World
Championships folkstyle wrestling tournament Oct. 21 and 22 in Provo.
Six-year-old Devin Johnson of South Jordan and his brother, Taylerm 8,
took second-place trophies in their respective categories. Brayden
Schwendiman, also from South Jordan, took second in the 12-and-under
division.
Taylor Kump of Herriman took fourth place in 8
and under 58 lbs., while sibling Tia Kump took fifth in 8-and-under 42
lbs. Tyler Schwendiman of South Jordan took fifth place in 8-and-under 54
lbs.
Tia and Brayden also received Outstanding
Sportsmanship Awards by the mat official "for wrestling hard, not giving
up, maintaining a positive attitude and, in general, being a good example
for others in the sport," said their coach, Bill Kilpack III.
The wrestlers are members of Mountain Top
Wrestling Club. The group also won the first place in-state team trophy
for the 6-12 and under age division.
