South Valley Kids Wrestle with Success

Six South Valley youngsters earned medals at the Gladiator World Championships folkstyle wrestling tournament Oct. 21 and 22 in Provo.

Six-year-old Devin Johnson of South Jordan and his brother, Taylerm 8, took second-place trophies in their respective categories. Brayden Schwendiman, also from South Jordan, took second in the 12-and-under division.

Taylor Kump of Herriman took fourth place in 8 and under 58 lbs., while sibling Tia Kump took fifth in 8-and-under 42 lbs. Tyler Schwendiman of South Jordan took fifth place in 8-and-under 54 lbs.

Tia and Brayden also received Outstanding Sportsmanship Awards by the mat official "for wrestling hard, not giving up, maintaining a positive attitude and, in general, being a good example for others in the sport," said their coach, Bill Kilpack III.

The wrestlers are members of Mountain Top Wrestling Club. The group also won the first place in-state team trophy for the 6-12 and under age division.
