Midvale's Orton and Two Sandy Kilpacks
Turn Lead to Wrestling Hardware
(Sandy, Utah)
— Mountain Top Wrestling
Club (formerly Jordan Freestyle Wrestling) members Wesly Orton and
brothers William and Garrick Kilpack traveled more than 450 miles up to
Leadville, Colo., for the Two-Mile High Wrestling Tournament to compete in
the international competition styles: Greco-Roman and freestyle. The
tournament was held at Lake County High School May 7, 2005. The three
athletes came away with five Leadville medals.
"This was a great tournament where a small number of guys got to match up
with some new faces," said Coach Bill Kilpack (III). "That's part of
what's great about traveling: getting that clean slate, where you don't
have any history to mess with your head game. You go out fresh and just
wrestle. They came away with some very impressive wins."
Ten-year-old William Kilpack of Sandy wrestled in the Midget division (9
and 10 year olds) in the 70-pound division. He beat all opponents in both
tournaments by pin of technical fall (gaining a 10-point lead) while only
allowing one legitimate point to be scored on him.
Eleven-year-old Wesly Orton of Midvale wrestled in the Novice division (11
and 12 year olds) in the 60-pound division. He also beat all opponents in
both tournaments by pin or technical fall, including a come-from-behind
victory resulting in a technical fall.
Four-year-old Garrick Kilpack of Sandy wrestled in the Flyweight division
(6 and under) in the 35-pound division. He earned a silver medal.
"This was a really nice trip," said Coach Bill Kilpack (Jr.). "Long drive,
and it was surprising to go from warm spring weather to a blizzard, but it
was fun all the same. Trips like these will stick with these kids for all
their lives. It's a great way to learn and grow as athletes and
individuals."
