Mountain Top Wrestling Members Snatch 14 Medals, 2nd Place Team
Trophy
at Riverton Spring Fling 'Em
(Sandy, Utah)
¾ Mountain Top Wrestling Club
(formerly Jordan Freestyle Wrestling) traveled up to Riverton, Wyo., for
the Riverton Spring Fling 'Em Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling
tournament held at Riverton High School April 29-30, 2005. Eight athletes
earned 14 medals between the two styles, and the team came away with the
2nd place team trophy.
"This was a great tournament where a small number of guys Made up for lack
of numbers by turning out superior performances," said Coach Bill Kilpack
(III). "With one more wrestler, we would have taken first. But, since we
had eight on a 12-man competition team roster, we're more than pleased. We
had rematches against some people who beat us or gave us trouble and came
away with very impressive wins."
Of the eight competitors in the freestyle tournament, all eight home
awards. Of the six competing in Greco-Roman, all six came away with
awards.
The team was led by William Kilpack of Sandy, Midget (ages 9 and 10) 70
lbs., who defeated all opponents on both days by fall or technical fall
(gaining a 10-point lead) and did not allow a single pointed to be scored
against him.
Also winning gold by pinning or teching every opponent in both tournaments
was Tyler Schwendiman of South Jordan, Bantam 50 lbs.
Also winning gold by pinning or teching every opponent were first-year
wrestler Cole Moody of West Jordan, Flyweight (ages 6 and under) 45 lbs.
in freestyle; and Riley Tatum of West Jordan, Bantam 45 lbs., in
freestyle. Jessica Osborne, Junior (ages 17 and 18) 105 lbs., also won
gold in both styles.
Taking a silver medal in freestyle was first-year wrestler Garrick Kilpack
of Sandy, Flyweight (ages 6 and under) 35 lbs., who won his silver-medal
match by technical fall, with a score of 10-0.
Taking third place medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman was 125-pound
Danny Huntsman of West Jordan, wrestling up in weight at 145 lbs. in
Greco-Roman, and up in weight at 135 lbs. in freestyle.
Taking a third-place medal in Greco-Roman was Brayden Schwendiman of South
Jordan, Novice 65 lbs. Brayden also took fifth place in freestyle at the
same weight.
In team competition, Mountain Top Wrestling Club took the second-place
trophy, earning 203 points, falling behind first place by a mere 18
points. Mountain Top and the first-place team were a good distance ahead
of third.
"This was a real nice trip," said Coach Bill Kilpack (Jr.). "The kids came
out and wrestled hard, really turning some heads, then got to take over a
restaurant and go back to play together in the pool back at the hotel.
These will be lifelong memories for them. Life really doesn't get much
better than this."
